Recommended Reading
Yogi Beans loves to share book recommendations with the parents and children that participate in our classes. Books are related to the world of yoga and general childhood development for purposes of leisure, fitness, reference and education. Our favorites include:
- The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein. The moral of this story never gets old: give and you will receive!
- Today I feel Silly: And Other Moods That Make My Day by Jamie Lee Curtis. This book offers a great introduction to familiarize children with the different feelings and emotions that everyone shares.
- My Daddy is a Pretzel: Yoga for Parents and Kids by Barron Baptiste. Baptiste writes a delightful narrative about various jobs the parents have of different children. The book is filled with yoga poses for your little yogi to practice.
- Sasha and Mishoo: Little Yoga Warriors by Jeffrey Mix and Katherine Homes. This interactive story about two yoga warriors whose kitty Chakra goes missing reminds us of the Choose Your Own Adventure books we used to read. The narrative is engaging and the exercises integrated throughout the book make the book feel like a game.
- The Yoga Adventure of Priya and Pooch, Indian Treasure by Yogi Beans instructor Ambria Mathews. This adorable book is the perfect gift for any young aspiring yogi. Priya and Pooch take you on a fun–filled journey through India while practicing poses and learning about Indian food and culture.
- The Peace Book by Todd Parr. Todd Parr's vibrant illustrations and quirky narrative appeals to kids, and also relays important messages about saving our earth, conservation, and unity. The Feelings Book and It's Okay to be Different are some of our other favorites.
- The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. We love almost all Eric Carle's books, and this book is a childhood favorite. So many of Carle's books revolve around nature, animals and the earth. They tie in very nicely with the poses we practice in class.
- Dogi The Yogi by Maria Notarile Scrivan. A sweet little book that shows Dogi practicing some of his favorite poses. Children will enjoy the pictures of Dogi performing the poses they learn in class.
